AML

Notes: Manufactured by the French firm of Panhard, the 4x4 AML comes in several types:  The AML-90 is armed with a French 90mm gun, the AML-60/12 with a 60mm gun/mortar and M-2HB, and the AML-60/20 with a 20mm autocannon and 60mm gun/mortar.  Both versions have a door on each side, and a hatch on top of the turret for the commander and gunner.

AMX-10RC

Notes: This reconnaissance vehicle first equipped French forces in 1976.  The AMX-10RC has been described as more of a light wheeled tank than a scout car, with its powerful 105mm gun.  Production of the first version stopped in 1994, with all versions after that being the upgraded AMX-10RC 105 TML versions (q.v.).  Due to its comprehensive communications suite, battle management system, and upgraded night vision, it was highly valued by French officers as a command vehicle as well as a scout vehicle.  Other users include Morocco (where they make up a substantial part of the armored forces of that country) and Qatar.  Many of the automotive components of the AMX-10RC are the same as on the AMX-10P tracked armored personnel carrier, with about 40% parts commonality, especially in the engine, transmission, and steering mechanisms.  The AMX-10RC has air conditioning and heating. The first half of production used a French-made gun, while later vehicles had a gun that fires NATO standard ammunition.  The driver’s hatch is in the front center of the vehicle, and there are two hatches on the turret deck for the commander and loader.  Though it is not a part of the vehicle as delivered, it was a common practice to equip these hatches with weapon mounts.

The AMX-10RC 105 TML is a progressive upgrade of the AMX-10RC armored reconnaissance vehicle, with appliqué armor, upgraded night vision, improved stabilization, and an optional Battle Management System for a commander to keep track of his units and enemy units on a computerized system.  A more powerful engine has been installed to cope with the extra weight.

Twilight 2000 Notes: Most of the French vehicles were deployed by the Foreign Legion, with about 50 being retained for use on the Franco-German border and 25 elsewhere in France.

EBR

Notes: This is one of the first armored vehicles built in France after the Second World War, but it is based on a pre-World War 2 design, much improved and updated with the technology of the post-war world.  Even so, it is a very old design, almost totally replaced by 2000 in the French Army by the AMX-10RC, and found primarily in the hands of Mauritania, Morocco (in small numbers), Portugal, and Tunisia.  The EBR has a low profile with four roadwheels and four steel-rimmed floating wheels to ease travel over rough terrain and prevent bottoming out.  A novel feature is the front and rear driver stations; the EBR is capable of being driven with equal speed and maneuverability in either direction; however, the Moroccans and Tunisians tend to fill the rear driver’s position with supplies and leave the second driver at home (allowing an extra 150 kg to be carried).  There are hatches in the front and back decks for the two drivers, and two hatches on the turret deck for the commander and gunner.

ERC-90

Notes: The ERC-90 F4 Sagaie 1 was the first form of the ERC-90, adopted by France in 1980 for the Foreign Legion, Marines, Mountain, and airborne forces, and later sold to the Ivory Coast and Nigeria.  They are basic 6x6 armored cars topped by large turrets mounting 90mm guns.  Starting in 1987, the gasoline engines in the French version were replaced by diesel engines; by the early-1990s, most of these conversions were complete.  Not all models of the Sagaie 1 are amphibious, but about half of those manufactured are, and they can enter the water after about 3 minutes of preparation.  The driver’s hatch is on the right side of the hull, and the commander and gunner’s hatches are on the turret deck.

The ERC-2 F4 Sagaie 2 is a standard ERC-90 (which is known as the Sagaie) with two engines fitted in place of the standard gasoline engine.  These are usually diesel engines, though gasoline engines are available.  The only known customer of this version was Gabon.  Its larger tires can distinguish this version.

This version is used by Mexico.  It uses a different turret and gun (but also of 90mm caliber), and carries more ammunition.  It is equipped with a laser rangefinder.

Twilight 2000 Notes: Some Sagaie 2s were diverted for French use from shipments originally meant for Gabon.

RPX 6000

Notes: This is another one of those vehicles that the French have offered for export. It can be fitted with a variety of turrets, and several different types were employed by the Legion.  It is light enough to be air dropped, and is fast.

Twilight 2000 Notes: This French-made vehicle was originally designed for export, but when the Foreign Legion deployed to the Middle East, quantities of this scout car were deployed with them, and used for reconnaissance.

Notes: The VBC-90 is a French-built, 6x6, armored car, intended for both domestic use and the export market.  It features a driver’s hatch on the front deck, and commander and gunner’s hatches on the turret deck.  It has an extremely high road speed, but suffers in cross-country performance due to its size.

VBL

Notes: This French light armored is basically an armored jeep-like vehicle with a multipurpose weapon mount on the roof and a modular interior construction that allows it to fulfill a variety of roles.  They were first place in French service in 1985, and were then sold to several other countries.  They can be fitted with a bewildering variety of weapon options, from light machineguns to light autocannons, grenade launchers to ATGM launchers.  Variants include the various weapon carriers (used as scout vehicles), a ground surveillance radar carrier, command vehicles, communications posts, and the ATGM carriers, which are covered in the Self-Propelled Guns section.  There is a door on either side of the cab, a hatch on the roof for the gunner, hatches on the roof for the commander and gunner, and a door on the rear of the vehicle.  The VBL is, in most cases, equipped with air conditioning and heating.  The LRAC-89, while issued with the vehicle, is not on a weapon mount.

Twilight 2000 Notes: VBLs were being built at the rate of 40 per month at the time of the Twilight War and by 1995, over 1500 were in use by the French armed forces alone.
