Browning A-500
Notes: Though this shotgun looks almost identical to the Auto-5, internally it is very different, using new technology. It is still a recoil-operated weapon, but the action is short recoil, and this mitigates the problems with misfires due to the firer not having the strength to handle the recoil properly. This also means that the A-500 can handle virtually every type of shotgun cartridge known, and it also keeps the number of parts required to a minimum. The A-500 is also a very low-maintenance weapon. There are several barrel lengths available, and two basic versions: the European version, which uses 2.75" shells, and the version sold in North America, which fires 3" shells. They both have interchangeable Invector chokes. This gun was introduced in 1987, but by 1994, it was replaced by the Browning Gold shotgun.

Browning Auto-5
Notes: One of FN/Browning’s oldest shotgun designs, the Auto-5 (also called the A-5) was designed by John Browning himself and first manufactured by FN from 1903-39, with sales beginning in North America in 1923. Early models, despite their condition, are typically still quite functional today, and are instantly recognizable by their square-backed action. Finish of these early models is typically blued, with a walnut semi-pistol grip wrist stock which is checkered on the pistol grip wrist and fore-end. Though they vary in workmanship, all are still considered masterpieces.
The Auto 5 is a recoil-operated shotgun, rather simple in design and easy to care for and use. Some complaints have been made that the recoil operation means the Auto 5 must be fired by a strong individual or well-braced, but these reports appear to be exaggerated. The earliest models have barrel lengths from of either 20 or 28 inches (though soon thereafter 26, 30, and 32-inch-barrel models were added, and the 20-inch version was dropped) topped with a ventilated sighting rib and simple bead sights, or just the bead sights. The safety is a switch ahead of the trigger guard. Gauges offered were 12-gauge 2.75" only; in 1936, the "Sweet Sixteen," a 16-gauge model was introduced that chambered for what was an unusual cartridge length even at that time – 2 9/16 inches (2.5625 inches). Many of these were later converted to 2.75" chambers by collectors and modern shooters, however, since 2 9/16-inch ammunition is generally available only by handloading these days. (After World War 2, the 2.75-inch cartridge length became standard for the 16-gauge models.)
Like most FN/Browning production, Auto-5 manufacture of the Auto-5 basically stopped after the Nazis invaded Belgium, and after World War 2 (until about 1952), FN was primarily committed to re-arming the Belgian armed forces and those of some other European companies. In 1946, FN contracted Auto-5 production out to Remington in the US, and these shotguns, often referred to as the "American Browning Auto-5" was produced until 1952. These versions were actually an amalgamation of the Model 11 and the Auto-5 (both have similar mechanisms and exterior designs, a legacy of an early John Browning/Remington collaboration), and they look a bit different then the standard Auto-5. (The engraving of deluxe models is also quite a bit different; most collectors say the American Browning is not as attractive gun as the FN product.) They still had the same basic features as the Auto-5, but a 20-gauge model was also introduced at this time.
In 1952, FN took over production of the Auto-5 again, and production of the Auto-5 continued in Belgium until 1976. (These are often known as "Mid-Production" Auto-5s.) The 20-gauge chambering was deleted from the standard model (for a short time, but later added again), but other versions were in 20 gauge. The standard model used barrels of 26-32 inches, with a barrel topped by either a ventilated sighting rib and bead sights, a solid rib with bead sights, or a plain barrel with bead sights. Except on deluxe models, the finish was blued, with a walnut stock checkered in the right places and having a semi-pistol grip wrist. After 1967, this was changed to a standard pistol grip wrist, and the fore-end was given a flattened bottom. The barrels of this period have fixed chokes, though a variety of chokes were available.
Variations of this period included the Auto-5 Lightweight, introduced in 1952 (though the 20-gauge model was not introduced until 1958); this version used a lighter (but still steel) receiver enhanced with scrollwork engravings. The weapon was otherwise similar to standard Auto-5 of the period. The Auto-5 Magnum (also known as the Auto-5M was introduced in 1958, designed for 3-inch magnum shells. Barrels were the same length, but invariably with Full Choke. There was no 16-gauge version, but a 20-gauge model was introduced in 1967. The Auto-5 Skeet is mostly identical to the Auto-5 Lightweight for game purposes, though there is no 16-gauge model, the barrels are either 26 or 28 inches with a Skeet Choke and only ventilated ribs are available. The Auto-5 Trap is identical to the standard version with a 30-inch barrel, but was chambered for 12 gauge 2.75" only, and the barrel has a Full Choke only. It was manufactured only until 1971. The Auto-5 Buck Special used a 24-inch barrel with Cylindrical Choke, adjustable rifle sights, and could fire both 2.75-inch and 3-inch shells in its 12 Gauge and 20 Gauge versions and 2.75-inch shells in its 16 Gauge version. Not manufactured until 1963, it was produced by FN until 1976. The Auto-5 Sweet Sixteen was a special 16-Gauge Model built from 1936-39, and then from 1952-76; it is identical to the standard Auto-5 in 16 Gauge for game purposes, but has a gold-plated trigger, polished receiver, and engraved scrollwork.
It should be noted that several grades and special editions of the Auto-5 were available during this period, with increasing levels of deluxe finishes, woods, and engraving.
In 1976, production of the Auto-5 shotgun moved to Japan, where it was undertaken by Miroku. (Final fitting, and in the case of higher-grade guns, assembly, was still done by FN in Belgium, and production was supervised by FN personnel in Japan.) The Auto-5 was then built in Japan, until 1999, when production of the Auto-5 finally stopped completely.
Versions manufactured by Miroku included standard Auto-5s and the Auto-5 Light 12 and Light 20. The Auto-5 Light 12 and Light 20 used 2.75-inch chambers exclusively and used a receiver of a lighter steel than older Auto-5s. It used barrels from 26-32 inches, with a ventilated sighting rib atop the barrel and bead sights on the rib. The Light 12 and Light 20 use Invector Plus variable chokes, though without any sort of choke tube added, the choke is Full. For game purposes, they are identical to the Mid-Production Auto-5 Lightweight.
The Auto-5M of this generation is roughly the same as the earlier Auto-5M (and is identical for game purposes), but can use Invector Plus variable choke tubes. This version of the Auto-5M was built from 1976-96. The Auto-5 Buck Special is also basically identical to the earlier version for game purposes, as was the Skeet (though the Skeet of this generation was built only until 1983); a Light Buck Special version was also built during the same period, chambered only for 2.75-inch shells. The two Buck Specials of this period were not made in 16-Gauge versions. A Sweet Sixteen version was also built from 1988-92; it too was similar to the earlier Sweet Sixteen for game purposes, but the barrels had a ventilated sighting rib atop the barrel and could use Invector Plus variable chokes.
In 1992, the Auto-5 Light Stalker and Magnum Stalker were introduced, and built until 1999; the Light Stalker uses 26 or 28-inch barrels and variable choke tubes, and is chambered only for 12-Gauge 2.75" shells. The Magnum Stalker uses 28 or 30-inch barrels with variable choke tubes. Both use a low ventilated sighting rib.
It should be noted that several grades and special editions of the Auto-5 were available, with differing levels of deluxe finishes, woods, and engraving, and in some cases different magazine capacities, sights, scope mounts, etc.

Browning B-2000
Notes: The B-2000 was produced from 1974-81, with about 115,000 of them being made. The parts for the B-2000 were made by FN in Belgium; they were then sent to Portugal for final assembly and fitting. The design of the B-2000 is such that it can fire virtually any sort of cartridge. The B-2000 was replaced by the B-80 in 1980.
The B-2000 is a gas-operated weapon. Part of the gas mechanism is underneath the barrel forward of the tubular magazine, which unfortunately leaves less room for the magazine itself, limiting its size. The standard model, the Chasse, is chambered for 2.75-inch shells. 12 Gauge models may have barrels from 26-32 inches; 20 gauge models may have barrels from 24-28 inches. In both cases, optional 24-inch rifled barrels are also available which are not suited for firing shot; these are known as Buck Specials. Choke is fixed in all cases, but chosen by the buyer. The shot barrels in all cases are topped by a ventilated sighting rib; rifled barrels have rifle-type sights.
A B-2000 Magnum model was also built; it is similar to the Chasse, but uses a 3-inch chamber, comes with barrels of 30 or 32 inches in 12 gauge only, and do not have rifled-barrel versions. The butt also has a thick rubber recoil pad.
Other versions include the B-2000 Trap, with a 12 gauge 2.75-inch chamber, a 30-inch barrel topped by a higher sighting rib, and a Monte-Carlo-type stock. It is identical to a 30-inch-barrel Chasse for game purposes. The B-2000 Skeet has the same size chamber and the same type of sighting rib above a 26-inch barrel; it is also the same as a Chasse (but with a 26-inch barrel) for game purposes.

Browning Fusion
Notes: This semiautomatic shotgun is related to the Browning Gold, and is actually included in the Gold range in North America. It is a gas-operated shotgun, with the common Browning gas operation being included with the tubular magazine, and the rest of the mechanism in the receiver. The Fusion is easily capable of firing virtually any sort of shotgun round due to its design. The Fusion has an ergonomic pistol grip stock, making it very easy to handle, and along with the sighting rib, giving it natural pointing qualities. The safety button is extra large and easily manipulated from the right or left. The front of the sighting rib has a florescent bead, making it even easier to aim. When introduced, the Fusion was designed only for 3" magnum shells, but was later produced for 2.75" shells also. The Fusion is fitted with Invector interchangeable chokes. The deluxe version is the Fusion Golden Clays (renamed the Fusion Ultimate in 2002). A version called the Fusion Combo has interchangeable 28-inch shot barrels and 24" rifled slug barrels. Another version is the Fusion Hunter, a 20 gauge 3-inch model with lighter weight.
Twilight 2000 Notes: This shotgun does not exist, not having been introduced until 2000.

Browning Gold
Notes: This shotgun was introduced in 1993. It is gas-operated, and the gas mechanism is in the same tube as the magazine, while the rest of the mechanism is in the receiver housing. This system means that the Gold can fire a wide variety of ammunition, virtually any sort or the proper gauge. The manual safety is a large button, which can be easily manipulated and reversed for left-handed shooters. The receiver housing is of light alloy, but most of the metal parts, including the barrel, are of chrome-molybdenum steel which has been blued. The gold was originally built in 10 gauge, 12 gauge, 20 gauge, and .410 gauge, but by 1996, all of these had been dropped except the 12 and 20 gauge versions (both with 3" chambers), though a special 10-gauge version, the Gold Light, was brought back in 2002.. 12 gauge versions include the Gold Hunter, with a 2.75-inch chamber; the Gold Hunter with a 3-inch chamber; the Gold Sporting Clays with a 2.75" chamber, longer barrels, a ventilated sighting rib, Invector Plus interchangeable chokes, and a ported barrel; the Gold Deer Hunter and Deer Stalker with rifled barrels, primarily for slug throwing, and with a synthetic stock; the Gold Waterfowl with 3.5" chambers; the Gold Turkey with a 24" barrel, and Hi-Viz fiberoptic sights; and several other versions that are identical to those cited above for game purposes. The 20 gauge and .410 gauge models almost seem like afterthoughts, with only one barrel length available (28 inches) and made only with 3-inch chambers. All of these guns (except the Gold Sporting Clays) come with Invector interchangeable chokes, and all have varnished walnut stocks and fore-ends. Starting in 1996, all Gold models are available with spacers that fit between the receiver housing and the stock, to change the angle of the stock to suit the shooter.
Twilight 2000 Notes: The Deer Hunter, Deer Stalker, and Gold 10-Gauge Light are not available.

Browning Maxus
Notes: The Browning Maxus is a new (as of 2008) semiautomatic shotgun with gas operation, and is sort of an extreme update to the Auto-5. The Maxus uses what Browning calls the Power Drive Gas System, which is a gas piston system that is extremely reliable even when driving the heavy loads of a 12-gauge shotgun, but also ensures reliability with sub-loaded and hotloaded rounds. This operation, in combination with an Inflex Technology recoil pad. The Vector Pro shock absorbing system, back-boring, and a well balanced gun help to considerably soften recoil.
The Maxus comes in two basic versions: The Mossy Oak Duck Blind and the Stalker. The Mossy Oak Duck Blind is finished using the Mossy Oak camouflage pattern. The receiver is of aluminum alloy, and the barrel is of a lightweight profile and either 26 or 28 inches. The chamber can handle up to 3.5-inch shells. The barrel is topped with a low-profile ventilated sighting rib with a white bead sight at the end. The stock is of composite material. The barrel can use screw-in choke tubes of Full, Modified, or Improved Cylinder. The action has a magazine cutoff that allows the feed from the magazine to be stopped; this allows the use of a different type of shell by hand-loading the Maxus. The Stalker version is essentially the same, but finished in black.

FN Self-Loading Police Shotgun
Notes: The FN Self-Loading Police Shotgun is a development of the Winchester Super X2, but has several improvements that make it a superior weapon to the Winchester. It has a Picatinny Rail to allow the mounting of virtually any sight, optic, or accessory. The stock is shortened; this makes it easier to use by smaller officers or those wearing body armor. The standard sight is an adjustable ghost-ring type. The controls are large for use by shooters in heavy gloves.

FN Tactical Police Shotgun
Notes: The Tactical Police Shotgun shares a buttstock and pistol grip with the M-4 Carbine. It is designed for throwing any type of ammunition, from batons to tungsten shot. The receiver is topped with a Picatinny Rail for maximum flexibility of sighting systems. The Tactical Police Shotgun is also a derivative of the Winchester 1300, which is a common weapon in many world police departments. The TPS is designed primarily for police and paramilitary forces, but has been seen in the hands of US troops in Afghanistan.
