Rogue River Chipmunk

Notes:  Originally built directly by Chipmunk Manufacturing, the Chipmunk was later manufactured and sold by Oregon Arms, until Rogue River bought the design and began to manufacture it.  The Chipmunk is a short single-shot rifle often given to children as a first rifle, and designed for beginners. The weapon has a very short 16.1-inch barrel, and uses a walnut stock (of a lower grade) with a hand-rubbed oil finish and a Monte Carlo comb.  The barrels may be of lightweight, medium, heavy, or bull weight, and each may have the options of standard walnut, deluxe checkered walnut, laminate, or synthetic stocks. Wooden stocks are dark-stained and have surprisingly good wood grain patterns. The buttstock has a Monte Carlo comb and a black plastic buttplate. The Chipmunk is definitely designed for youths, and the most obvious sign of this is the trigger guard, which is barely big enough to accept an adult man’s finger. The bolt knob is about half the size of most bolt-action rifles’ knobs. The LOP is only 29.2 centimeters. They have rebounding firing pins to inhibit accidental discharge.  The Chipmunk, despite being designed for children, is drilled and tapped for a scope mount as well as having a fully adjustable peep rear sight combined with a ramped front sight which is painted white along the rear slope.

However, there are some negative points. The receiver’s tolerances are so high that it produces a 12 pound pull weight to cock the bolt, way to high for a youth-orientated rifle.  (Many parents take Chipmunks to armorers to fix this, essentially loosening the tolerances.)  The Chipmunk does not have a loading ramp, so the shooter must insert his rounds into the chamber manually.  The pull weight of the trigger is only 3.5 pounds, but trigger pull is described as mushy and without a clear release point.

The Chipmunk is basically a deluxe beginners’ rifle.

Savage 40 (New)

Notes: This is not the first Savage rifle to be called the Model 40.  The new Model 40 is a single-shot bolt-action rifle released in early 2005 chambered for .22 Hornet; other chamberings are expected for 2006 (or possibly later), and these are represented below in speculative terms.  The receiver is of heat-treated steel, and the top of the receiver has a Weaver-type scope base already installed.  The barrel is actually threaded about 7.6 centimeters ahead of the breech instead of right at the breech; this gives the barrel additional support from the receiver and strengthens the breech.  It also somewhat enhances accuracy.  The new Model 40 is equipped with an adjustable AccuTrigger.  The new Model 40 does have a manual safety which locks the bolt open if the bolt is drawn to the rear, and otherwise locks the trigger mechanism.  The stock is of laminated hardwood.

Twilight 2000 Notes: This rifle does not exist.

Savage 42

Notes: The Model 42 is an update of the old Savage Model 24 combination rifle/shotgun. The interior and lockwork of the Model 42 is largely the same as the Model 24, but the furniture of the Model 42 is almost totally of synthetic material, and includes a ventilated rubber recoil pad.  The action is a simple break-open action, with the rifle round firing through the top barrel and the shotgun firing through the bottom barrel. An ambidextrous button under the hammer is the safety. Being a break-open action, the upper barrel may fire Long Rifle and Magnum rounds, and the lower barrel may fire three sizes of shotgun shell.  The pistol grip wrist and fore-end are ribbed for extra gripping, and the barrel selector is directly in front of the trigger guard.

The Model 42 Takedown is essentially the same weapon, but the weapon may be broken in half for transport.

David Higginbotham at Guns.com says that the Model 42 is simultaneously one of the worst rimfire rifles he’s ever fired and one of the best shotguns he’s ever fired.  Mr. Higginbotham cites the lack of accuracy at any range he was unable to achieve with the rimfire barrel, and some on the internet agree with him.  Others say the opposite – that the rimfire barrel is quite accurate.  So, your milage may vary.  I have not adjusted the figures below for any perceived accuracy or inaccuracy.

Savage Cub Youth

Notes: Intended as a first rifle for youth, the Cub Youth is a single-shot bolt-action rimfire rifle. The stock is of dark-stained hardwood; the stock is slick to the touch and has only rudimentary weatherproofing.  The thin fore-end does not have a palm swell or checkering, nor does the semi-pistol grip. The LOP is short at 29.2 centimeters; this is good for the average smaller-stature pre-teen or shooter in their early teens, but an adult would find properly shouldering the rifle difficult, is not impossible. The stock and chamber are on almost a straight line, but there is no raised cheek area on the stock. The buttplate is plastic rather than rubber, and this can lead to slippage during recoil or is the rifle is shouldered for a long period. The bolt handle is easy to move up and down, but pulling it to the rear reveals a rather stiff action.  The barrel is 16.125 inches long, blued, and, unusual in such a rifle, is free-floating.  The manual safety is on the right side of the receiver, above the trigger guard. The action can be reciprocated with the Cub Youth on safe, though it will not fire. The trigger pack, again unusually for such a rifle, is stainless steel – except for the separate trigger guard, which is plastic, and quite often breaks during use.  In addition, the gap between the trigger and trigger is just enough to pinch small fingers.  The trigger pull weight is heavy (5.5 pounds) for a youth rifle. The Cub has a bead front sight and a rear peep sight; neither is adjustable.  The rear peep sight and the front bead, however, are difficult to line up due to a peep aperture that is really too small; this is the time to teach your son or daughter about Kentucky Windage. Otherwise, the action works uneventfully.  If I had kids, I would not buy them the Cub Youth as their first rifle.

Shiloh Sharps 1874 Creedmoor Silhouette

Notes: These are modern descendants of the original Sharps 1874 single-shot rifles, designed originally for long-range shots at medium to large game; some are capable of taking down African and Asian game as well as North American game and large animals. Most fire some rather obscure cartridges that were once popular at another time.

The 1874 Creedmoor Silhouette Rifle is a medium-length-barreled version of the 1874, with round tapered barrels of 28 or 30 inches.  Finish for the barrel is as standard polished blue, though matte blue is an option.  The barrel may be standard or custom-bedded. Standard stock is of extra-fancy walnut, with presentation-grade walnut as an option (no difference in game terms).  Standard Wood Finish is AA-Grade, with AAA-Grade an option.  The standard buttplate is of hard, textured rubber, though checkered steel is an option.  The receiver finish is color-case hardened; options include pack hardened, antique metal, antique metal and wood, and French gray.  The receivers may be light, heavy, or medium.  Despite the receiver finish or weight, all are identical for game purposes.  As an option, sling swivels may be attached front and rear.  Also as an option, the forearm and semi-pistol may be checkered, though again, this has no effect in game terms.  The fore-end may be pewter-tipped or ebony-tipped, with a rounded or Schnabel tip.  Rear sights may be semi-Buckhorn or Full Buckhorn, with a simple dovetail and no sight as an option (the user provides his own sights). Vernier tang sights are also provided.  The standard front sight is a simple blade, though Shiloh or MVA front sights are an option, as is a dovetail for the user to provide his own sights. Drilling and Tapping is an option; normally, drilling and tapping is not provided. (Drilling and Tapping costs $20 more.)

Notes: Similar in concept to the G2 Contender Rifle below (though it predates that weapon), the Encore rifle uses a heavier barrel and a different mix of calibers (and for that matter, a different mix of calibers than the Encore pistol).  It, like the G2 Contender rifle, is an Encore pistol turned into a break-open rifle by adding a stock, longer fore-end, and longer barrel.  The Encore rifle is drilled and tapped for a Thompson/Center scope mount, and has alternate barrels with iron sights.  The stock and fore-end may be made of walnut or composite material, and the metalwork may be blued or have a stainless steel finish.  The pistol grip wrist is deep and there is a slight drop to the stock so that scopes are at eye level when the rifle is shouldered.  The cheekpiece is of the Monte Carlo style, and there is a rubber recoil pad on the butt.

The Hunter is a newer version of the Encore, which comes in both rifle or pistol versions.  The standard Hunter rifle has a synthetic stock with a Monte Carlo stock, and has a rubber/gel recoil pad on the butt, as well as a stock takeup pattern which further decreases felt recoil.  The Encore Hunter is a switch-barrel rifle, and the rifle comes in chamberings from .204 Ruger to .500 Smith & Wesson Magnum. It can also be configured as a blackpowder muzzleloader in .50 caliber (which will not be covered here).  Barrel lengths vary depending on the chambering, but all barrels are of heavy profile and made of stainless steel; they come in blued round-barrel versions or satin stainless barrels, and most are fluted.

Thompson/Center G2 Contender Rifle

Notes: This is basically the Thompson/Center G2 Contender pistol turned into a rifle by adding a stock, fore-end, and longer barrel.  Like the G2 Contender pistol, it is a break-open single-shot weapon, but the barrel is heavier and longer at 23 inches and a heavy profile.  Unlike the G2 Contender pistol, the rifle has no iron sights as standard, but is drilled and tapped for a scope mount instead.  There are however two alternate barrels, one with adjustable iron sights, and one with a sighting rib and a front sight bead.  The barrels are interchangeable, allowing all the different calibers to be used if one has the proper barrels.  The trigger is adjustable for travel, like the T/C G2 Contender pistol.  Metalwork is blued.

Twilight 2000 Notes: This rifle is not available in the Twilight 2000 timeline.

Thompson/Center TCR 83

Notes: The TCR 83 (Thompson/Center Rifle) was one of the first of T/Cs rifle designs, built to be light and handy but deliver good accuracy for its relatively small size.  As the name indicates, the TCR 83 was introduced in 1983, and was built until 1987.  It is basically a standard sort of single-shot rifle, but has interchangeable barrels, allowing the use of several calibers in a single rifle.  The action is break-open (like most of T/Cs single-shot designs), with a lever mounted on top the tang to unlock the weapon for loading.  The stock is of polished walnut with a straight-comb and a pistol grip wrist.  The pistol grip wrist is checkered, while the fore-end is grooved for a better hold.  Though the TCR 83 normally had a standard trigger, a set trigger could be had upon request.  The rear sight was a folding leaf, and the rifle is drilled and tapped.  The barrel is medium-weight and 23 inches long.

Along with the TCR 83, the TCR 83 Aristocrat was built (until 1986); this was a deluxe version with a stock and fore-end of select walnut, a raised cheekpiece on the stock, checkering instead of grooves on the fore-end, and a standard set trigger.  In 1987, the TCR 87 Hunter replaced the TCR 83; this was basically an improved TCR 83, and did not have iron sights unless requested by the buyer.  The barrel could be a medium-weight or heavy-weight barrel.  Sling swivels were added.  A deluxe version, the TCR 87 Hunter Deluxe, was also built at the time.  The two deluxe versions are identical to their parent designs for game purposes.  Production of the TCR 87 Hunter stopped in 1995.
