Notes: This shotgun began as a weapon that was to be used by US troops in the trenches of World War 1; however, Remington’s trench model was not ready before World War 1 ended. Remington then changed its focus for the weapon to police use, and it became the Model 11R (R for Riot). It achieved considerable popularity between World War 1 and 2, and was one of the few semiautomatic shotguns available at the time. During World War 2, they were picked up for military use, though often without the bayonet lug common to military shotguns of the period. Most of these military shotguns were sold off to police departments after World War 2. One of the more infamous users of the Model 11R was Bonnie Parker (as in Bonnie and Clyde), who used one with cut-down barrel. The Remington Model 11R is basically a US copy of the Browning Auto-5M, with a few cosmetic differences.

Notes: This was originally designed to be the company’s successor to the 1100, but was instead developed into a weapon primarily meant to be used by hunters who need longer barrels and those who are inexperienced with semiautomatic shotguns. The weapon’s action was simplified to make caring for the weapon easier and operation more reliable, while the recoil mechanism was modified to reduce recoil. To make the weapon even easier to fire, a thick recoil pad was added to the butt. Only one version of the standard Model 11-87 was made with a shorter barrel, and it is a rather difficult-to-find weapon; most 11-87’s have longer barrels. The barrel is equipped with an interchangeable choke set. The mechanism and piston are nickel-plated, and the patented piston system is virtually self-cleaning. A left-handed version is available, but only with a 28-inch barrel. The Model 11-87 was introduced in 1987. A deluxe version, the Premier, was introduced in 1999; it is engraved on both sides of the receiver housing. It is identical to the standard version for game terms.

The Remington 11-87P is a development of the Model 11-87 modified for military use, used in those times when a pump-action weapon simply does throw out lead fast enough for your purposes. It differs from the standard 11-87 in having better chrome inside the barrel, a bayonet lug, extended magazine, and a recoil pad on the butt that is almost a full inch thick. There are also three types of sights for the Model 11-87P: standard bead-type sights, notch-and-post rifle-type sights (with an adjustable rear sight), and adjustable ghost ring rear and blade front sights. The stock is of polypropylene and the metal parts are Parkerized. The standard choke is Improved Cylinder; however, Remington will make the Military Version with other chokes upon order. The Military Version has a shorter 18-inch barrel; a 14-inch barrel version, the Entry Gun, is also available to military and police concerns. (Police versions and the Entry Gun do not have a bayonet lug.) Chokes on all military models are Improved Cylinder, except for the Entry Gun, which uses a Modified choke.

The Model 11-87 SP (Special Purpose) is a series of Model 11-87 versions designed specifically for hunting. The Model 11-87 SPS-FR (Special Purpose Shotgun Fully Rifled) is a version which was introduced in 1991 with rifling for the firing of slugs and Saboted slugs; it is not meant for shot, and is equipped rifle-type sights with TruGlo high-visibility inserts. It is equipped with a reinforced plastic stock and fore-end. A similar version, the Model 11-87 Cantilever Deer Gun, has a special mount for a telescopic sight, but has no iron sights. (It is otherwise identical to the SPS-FR for game purposes.) The Model 11-87 SPS-T (Turkey) also has a short barrel, but is designed for either shot or slugs. It has interchangeable chokes, a sighting rib, and its plastic stock is finished with a Mossy Oak pattern. The Model 11-87 SPS-T was introduced in 1999; in 2000, it was given TruGlo sight inserts. The Model 11-87 SP and SPS Super Magnum shotguns (one with a wooden stock, and the other with a plastic stock), are designed for the firing of 3.5-inch, 3-inch, and 2.75-inch shells. They have interchangeable chokes, and weigh and shoot the same for game purposes. A version of the SPS Super Magnum, the SPS Super Magnum Camo is finished all over in a Mossy Oak pattern and is equipped only with a 28-inch barrel, but is otherwise identical. Another nearly identical model is the SPS-T Super Magnum Camo Cantilever; this version has a special mount for a telescopic sight and no sighting rib. The SPS-T RS/TG (Rifle Sight TruGlo) has a short 23-inch barrel with rifle-type sights that have TruGlo inserts. Rifled-barrel versions of these guns are also available, with barrels of either 21 or 23 inches and rifle-type sights; these have been available since 2002.

Notes: Introduced in 1996, the Euro Lightweight was primarily meant for the European market, but also had some small sales in North America. It did not sell well, and in 2000 was taken out of production, despite the fact that it was chosen in 1997 by Shooting Industry magazine as the Shotgun of the Year. The Euro Lightweight is a semiautomatic shotgun with a strong chrome-molybdenum barrel that has a ventilated sighting rib. It is similar in many respects to the Model 11-87 and may be partially based on that model. The receiver and mechanism are made from lightweight steel, and the receiver is engraved on both sides. The Euro Lightweight is equipped with a set of interchangeable chokes for Improved Cylinder, Modified, and Full.

Notes: Building a small arm using a lot of composites and titanium alloys is common in pistols and revolvers, a bit less common in rifles and some military weapons, but as I write this (March 2007) it is virtually unknown in shotguns. However, the Model 105CTi is just such a shotgun. Designed in late 2005, and introduced to the public at the 2006 SHOT Show, the Model 105CTi went on sale in early 2007.

While the overall design is essentially that of a rather conventional semiautomatic, tubular-magazine-fed shotgun, the receiver is made from aircraft-quality titanium alloy encased within a carbon-fiber shell. The barrel is made from lightweight, high-grade steel, further lowering the weight without sacrificing strength, and the tubular magazine is of aluminum alloy. The stock and fore-end are of mid-grade walnut, with an R3 recoil pad on the butt.

Though the Model 105CTi is gas-operated, there are some wrinkles to its operating system. The recoil of the shell being fired, in addition to cycling the bolt, also cycles an inertia sleeve which helps reduce recoil. There is also an oil-filled cylinder in the stock that further dampens recoil by reducing the velocity of the cycling bolt. The trigger group is tournament-grade. Despite all this, the Model 105CTi has remarkably few moving parts, and the gas system is designed to resist fouling as much as possible. The barrel is also overbored, again slightly reducing recoil and providing additional resistance to fouling. The Model 105CTi is provided with three screw-in ProBore choke tubes – Improved Cylinder, Modified, and Full. Without any of these choke tubes, the Model 105CTi has a Cylindrical choke. The barrel is topped with a ventilated sighting rib which also have bead sights at the front and rear. Other unusual features include the controls and shell ejection – the controls are ambidextrous, and ejection is downward, meaning the Model 105CTi is essentially ambidextrous.

Notes: An autoloading shotgun, the 1100 was originally designed for hunting and trap shooting. The recoil spring is located in the stock of the weapon. A variant by Sage International uses a recoil spring conversion and a folding stock or telescoping stock. Some versions have pistol grips, rifle sights, or sight mounts. Before 1987, the barrel had a fixed choke, but interchangeable choke sets were made for the Model 1100 thereafter.

Notes: This variant of the standard Model 1100 is designed specifically for hunting. The Special Field has a short 23-inch barrel, and is designed in 12 and 20 gauge versions. The stock is of fine walnut, and is in the English (straight wrist) style. The Model 1100 LT-20 is designed only for 20 gauge shells, and has a walnut stock with a pistol grip wrist. There is a ventilated sighting rib above the barrel. The LT-20 Magnum is designed to use 3-inch 20 gauge shells and comes in only a 28-inch barrel version, but is otherwise identical to the standard LT-20. These versions ended production in 2000, replaced by versions with plastic stocks, engraved receivers, and usually camouflaged in the Mossy Oak pattern.

The Model 1100 LT-20 Youth is a version designed for beginning shooters and teenagers. The stock is shorter, and the barrel is shortened to 21 inches. Until 1998, this model was made with both walnut and black plastic stocks and fore-ends, but after that, the walnut-stocked version was dropped. A subset of this gun is the Model 1100 LT-20 Youth Turkey, chambered for 3-inch shells and with a rear leaf sight containing a green glass fiber rod, and front sight with a TruGlo insert, as well as a sighting rib. The stock is plastic and finished in the Mossy Oak pattern. A similar weapon is the Model 1100 Youth Synthetic Turkey Camo; it does not have the iron sights and is in a finish known as Real Tree Advantage Camo, but is otherwise the same as the LT-20 Youth Camo for game purposes.

Twilight 2000 Notes: Only the walnut-stocked versions of the Special Field, LT-20, and LT-20 Magnum exist in the Twilight 2000 timeline.

Notes: This variant of the Model 1100 is designed primarily for bird hunting and skeet shooting, and has a long barrel, sighting rib, and a decent heft for its size, not too light or heavy. It appeared in 1996. The Remington 1100 action is a bit dated, but utterly reliable, and by 2004, the Remington 1100 Sporting 410 is the only .410-gauge shotgun being made in the US by any major firearms manufacturer. The Model 1100 Sporting has a walnut stock and a chrome-molybdenum-steel barrel with interchangeable chokes of Skeet, Improved Cylinder, Light Modified, and Modified. A variant of the Model 1100 Sporting is the Model 1100 Classic Trap; this version has a longer barrel, a recoil pad on the Monte Carlo-style stock, a blued barrel and mechanism, and interchangeable chokes. The trigger has gold plating. This version appeared in 2000.

Notes: This is a lightweight, small-caliber variant of the Remington 1100 firing short 2 1/2" shells. It is meant for children and young teens to introduce them to hunting and trap shooting. The short shells and small caliber do not make especially effective as an antipersonnel weapon or for hunting large animals or birds, but it is easy to handle and take care of.

Notes: First developed specifically for use by US Navy SEALs in Vietnam, the first example of the Remington 7188, the Mk 1, appeared in 1967, and was perhaps the most destructive close combat weapon produced to that date. Developed from the Remington 1100, the Model 7188 was a fully-automatic version of that weapon, with some other modifications requested by the SEALs. Though these weapons were never large in number, the Mk 1 version was the most common of them; it had a perforated barrel shroud, extended tubular magazine, bayonet mount, and adjustable rifle sights. The Mk 2 was identical, but used a ventilated barrel rib and front bead sight of a standard shotgun. The Mk 3 was also identical to the Mk 1 but did not have the perforated barrel shroud. The Mk 4 was a Mk 3 with standard shotgun-style sights. The Mk 5 was also similar to the Mk 1, but did not have an extended magazine, and also did not have the perforated barrel shroud. The Mk 6 was identical to the Mk 5, but had standard shotgun-style sights.

While the SEALs liked the fantastic destructive power of the Model 7188 (especially with the custom loads they tended to use), they found the Model 7188 had one big problem: it was highly-sensitive to dirt and fouling, and this made it quite unsuited for general use in Vietnam. In addition, the enormous recoil of a full-auto burst (even at the low cyclic rate of the Model 7188) was difficult to control, and even with an extended magazine, the ammunition supply was thought to be too small by many SEALs. There were never more than a couple of dozen of each Mark of the Model 7188 made, and they were withdrawn from service within a few years, a weapon experiment that ultimately failed. Some were converted back to semiautomatic fire; though this essentially turned them back into Remington 1100s (albeit, with unique markings and an unusual selector lever), they were designated Model 7180s.

For game purposes, the Mk 1, 2, 3, and 4 are identical, and the Mk 5 and 6 are identical. The Model 7180s are simply 7188s which may fire on semiautomatic only.

Notes: This is a semiautomatic 10-gauge shotgun, introduced in 1989. It is a large and heavy weapon with long barrels to take advantage of the caliber. It comes with a thick recoil pad, and is said to be comfortable to shoot despite its heavy caliber. The SP-10 is gas-operated, and is specifically designed for 3 1/2" shells; smaller shells will not generate enough gas to cycle the bolt and the weapon will almost certainly jam if smaller shells are fired through the SP-10. The SP-10 is equipped with interchangeable chokes for Full or Modified.

Another version of the SP-10 Magnum is the SP-10 Magnum Turkey Camo, introduced in 1993. This version has a short 23-inch barrel with interchangeable chokes of Full, Modified, and Extra Full. It has a plastic stock and the entire gun is finished in Remington’s Mossy Oak camouflage pattern. A subset of this gun is the SP-10 Turkey Camo NWTF (National Wild Turkey Foundation); this version was made in 1998 to commemorate the 25^th anniversary of that foundation, and part of the sales of the gun was given to that foundation. It is identical to the SP-10 Magnum Turkey Camo except for the TruGlo sights on the barrel rib and the NWTF logo on the receiver.

In 1998, Remington brought out the SP-10 Magnum Camo; it followed in 2000 with the SP-10 Magnum Synthetic. These are SP-10’s with plastic stocks and fore-ends and are made only with 26-inch barrels. The Magnum Camo has, of course, the Mossy Oak finish, while the Synthetic is finished in matte black.
