AH Fox Trap

Notes: This gun began in production in 1919, but only 571 were built between 1919 and the early 1940s.  The Fox Trap uses a box lock, a top lever break Open device, an internal hammer, and an automatic ejector.  The barrel has a ventilated sighting rib, with ivory bead sights front and rear.  The receiver and side plates have excellent scrollwork engravings. The side plates, receiver, trigger guard, and trigger are color-case hardened. while the barrel is blued.  The stock is walnut which is oil finished and has a detachable Monte Carlo cheekpiece, with a recoil pad on the butt.  Unlike most shotguns with a recoil pad, it is made of red rubber instead of black. The trigger action is known to be crisp and light.

American Arms Bristol

Notes: This is an over and-under shotgun with a 12-gauge upper barrel and a 20-gauge lower barrel.  Both barrels are variable choke, and the stock has a recoil pad.  Three barrel lengths are available, but both barrels on a particular Bristol must be the same length, unless the Bristol involved was specially made for someone.

American Arms Brittany

Notes: A traditional double-barreled shotgun, the Brittany was introduced in 1989.  It uses a boxlock action; one source I read said that the Brittany uses 27-inch barrels in 12 Gauge and 25-inch barrels for the 20 Gauge version, and an online source has a Brittany for sale with 26-inch barrels; I will use both barrel lengths to cover all bases.  Online sources also state that the Brittany can take screw-in choke tubes, though I have not been able to find what the base choke is.  (Most shotguns which can take interchangeable choke tubes have a base choke of Full, however.) The barrels are finished in treated natural metal; the side plates are color case-hardened. The action includes automatic ejectors and a single selective trigger, with the barrel to be fired determined by a tang selector that also safes the weapon.  The side plates are engraved with woodland scenes.  The stock is made of Spanish walnut, finished with polyurethane and highly-polished; it has a straight wrist and a rubber non-skid buttplate (this is not a pad).  The forearm terminates in a Schnabel tip. The action is designed to take Magnum and regular-length shells. The Brittany is lightweight, unfortunately leading to stiff recoil.

American Arms Silver II

Notes: American Arms has some manufacturing capability in the US, but the Silver II is built in Spain, then exported to American Arms for sale.  Spain is known for it’s building of fine shotguns, and the Silver II is made with a stock of Spanish walnut, oil-finished and polished to high sheen.  The barrels are blued, while the action is engraved natural metal, and the tang, trigger guard, and trigger are of color case-hardened finish, as are the engraved side plates.  The side plates conceal a true boxlock. The upper barrel not only has a ventilated aiming rib, but a ventilated rib separates the barrels.  Despite its handsome looks, the Silver II is considered a light shotgun, due to the diminutive gauge, and recoil is surprisingly stiff.

Baker Batavia Leader

Notes: Originally coming under the Batavia name, it acquired the Baker name when HD Folsom bought Batavia and Baker, and Batavia shotguns were put under the Baker name. The first leaders were 20-gauge shotguns that were a bit expensive for the time (at $62 IRL in the late 1920s) but cheaper than previous Baker and Batavia shotguns.  Later, 12 and 16-gauge versions were added; the 1928 catalog listed a .410-gauge model, but it is unclear whether any were actually built or sold.  (It is included below for completeness.) The receiver, barrel selector, trigger, and trigger guard are color-case hardened, with the barrels blued and formed into a monobloc. The safety was a separate thumb switch on the tang under the barrel selector,  The furniture is oil-finished walnut; most examples found today have darkened with age. The center of the barrels had a ribbed sighting trough with a bolt bead front sight. The rest of the metalwork is blued, and the Batavia has engraved side plates.

The Black Beauty Special features full engraving. true side plates and a boxlock, better qia;ity wood (dark finished) and black-finished metalwork except for the silver-plated side plates. Though IRL is is far more expensive than the leader, for game purposes it is identical to the Leader.

Charles Daly 105 Series

Notes: Built exclusively for Charles Daly by a Turkish manufacturer, the Model 105 series are “luxury-working” shotguns that are very much functional weapons, but are made with good-quality Turkish walnut and hand engraved with bird-hunting scenes.  The Model 105 series uses double triggers, with the front trigger firing the lower barrel.  Chokes are fixed but can be had to order.  The sighting rib is ventilated, and the front of the rib has a gold-bead sight.  The Model 105 series, though having tight tolerances, is very easy to field-strip.  Though the butt pad is meant to flex into the butt instead of being a thick, soft recoil pad, it also does not have the recoil-dampening ability of normal recoil pads.  The Model 105 series is meant to be a very good-quality shotgun that is much less expensive (in real-life terms) than comparable shotguns.

The Model 105 is the 12-Gauge model.  The Model 105 has a full upland bird hunting scene engraved on its receiver, and has dark-blued semi-gloss metalwork for the most part.  The Model 106 is for smaller gauges; this version has raised-gold geese in flight on both sides of the blued receiver.

Charles Daly Country Squire/Field Grade Hunter Over-And Under

Notes: These weapons, though named the same as some of the side-by-side Charles Daly shotguns, are quite different in design, being over-and-under shotguns.  The Country Squire is, however, similar in concept to the side-by-side Country Squire, being a lightweight .410 gauge shotgun with 26-inch barrels.  The stock is English style, with a straight wrist.  The Country Squire has automatic ejection of spent shells, and a light alloy breech block.  It has a double trigger, a sighting rib above the barrels, and barrels with a fixed Full choke.

The Field Grade Hunter over-and-under is, as the side-by-side Field Grade Hunter, available in several gauges and two barrel lengths.  The breech block is also of light alloy, and the barrels have a sighting rib on top with a brass front sight rib.  The stock has a pistol grip wrist.  There is a version with no ejectors, and one with automatic ejectors.  The barrels have fixed chokes which may be Modified, Full, or Improved Cylinder.  The chambers are for 3-inch shells, except for the 2.75” chambers of the 28-gauge version.

The Field Hunter Ultra-Light is a third version of this shotgun; they have breech blocks made from even lighter alloys, and use 2.75-inch chambers and 26-inch barrels exclusively.  The Field Hunter Ultra-Light comes only in 12 and 20 gauge models.  This shotgun is equipped with automatic extractors for the shells.

Twilight 2000 Notes: These are very rare shotguns.

Charles Daly Country Squire/Superior Grade Hunter/Empire Grade Hunter Side-By-Side

Notes: These double-barreled shotguns are of similar design and construction, but vary in gauge, barrel length, and degree of fanciness.  The Country Squire is a lightweight shotgun designed only for .410 Gauge and with only one barrel length – 26 inches.  It has a straight-wrist English-style stock, and though it has ejectors for spent shells, those ejectors merely move the shells out of the chamber far enough for them to be easily removed.  It has a double trigger, and no sights or sighting ribs.  The choke is fixed and Full.

The Superior Grade Hunter Is designed for several gauges and is basically a deluxe version of the Field Grade Hunter Side-By-Side.  The breech of the Superior Grade Hunter is of chrome-molybdenum steel, plated with a silver-gray protective coating that is engraved with intricate designs.  Unlike the Country Squire, it has an automatic safety that actuates when the gun is breeched, as well as a manual safety.  The barrels have fixed chokes which may be Modified, Full, or Improved Cylinder.  It uses double triggers.  The stock is a walnut one with a pistol grip-wrist.

The Empire Grade Hunter is a more deluxe version of the Superior Grade Hunter.  It uses a straight-wrist English-style stock, and gauges are restricted to 12 and 20 gauge, with 3-inch chambers.  Chokes are the same as for the Superior Grade Hunter.

Twilight 2000 Notes: These are extremely rare shotguns.

Charles Daly Diamond Grade DL Hunter/Diamond Regent DL Side-By-Side

Notes: These shotguns were the top of the Charles Daly range in 1997; they have extravagantly-engraved side plates, and have English-style stocks made of select European walnut.  The side plates are also removable, and can be changed for ones with different designs.  The breech is tempered, and there are gas ports in the breech to ventilate excess gas safely.  They have automatic ejectors for spent shells.  The Diamond Grade DL Hunter is made for several gauges and two barrel lengths, and have fixed chokes of Modified, Full, or Improved Cylinder.  Chambers are 3 inch except for the 28 gauge, which has a 2.75-inch chamber.  The Diamond Regent DL is the absolute epitome of a fancy shotgun, with a classic English stock made of the best walnut available.  The side plates are removable and have engravings which are inlaid with gold.  The barrels are of chromium-nickel steel, and the breech is spring-assisted for easier opening.  The Diamond Regent DL has automatic ejectors for spent shells.  The Diamond Regent DL is made only to order; it is not an “off the rack” shotgun.  Both guns have a full-length ventilated sighting rib.  However the Diamond Regent DL is identical to the Diamond Grade DL Hunter for game purposes, and no separate statistics are given below.

Twilight 2000 Notes: These shotguns are extremely rare.

Charles Daly Empire Grade Hunter Over-And Under

Notes: This is set of shotguns which are quite fancy and ornate.  There are two major variations of the Empire Grade Hunter over-and under – the EDL, with imitation side lock plates (it has no actual side lock), and the DL version with a box lock.  The EDL comes in several gauges and has engraved side plates.  It has automatic ejectors and the barrels are equipped with MC-5 interchangeable chokes in 12 gauge and 20 gauge models; the 28 gauge and .410 gauge versions have fixed chokes of the buyer’s choice.  The barrels are topped with a ventilated sighting rib with a front sight bead that has a red fiberoptic bead.  The Empire Grade Hunter EDL has a single selective trigger; normally it fires the bottom barrel first, but this may be reversed so that the top barrel fires first.  The stock is of walnut with a pistol grip wrist.  The DL version is designed differently, and is actually stronger in the breech, but is identical for game terms and there is no separate entry given below.

Special versions include the Empire Grade Sporting, with a box lock, no side plates, and with compensator ports to cut recoil, and slightly heavier; and the Empire Grade Trap, with a choice of long barrels, and again even heavier.

Twilight 2000 Notes: These shotguns do not exist.

Charles Daly Field II

Notes:  These are high-quality side-by-side double-barreled shotguns for use in trap shooting and general hunting.  They were made to be inexpensive, but not cheap in quality.  As such, they are rather minimalist guns, but adequate for their purpose, or a couple of fair-sized holes in someone.

Charles Daly Field Grade Hunter Side-by-Side

Notes: This is a double-barreled shotgun designed in several chamberings and different barrel lengths depending upon the chambering.  They all have a box lock of the Anson and Deeley type, with a breech of nickel-plated chrome-molybdenum steel and barrels of similar-strength steel.  They are equipped with a single trigger, and have a barrel selector.  AE versions have automatic ejectors, while MC versions do not.  The MC versions also have interchangeable chokes, while the AE versions have fixed chokes of the buyer’s choice.  There are also AE-MC versions, which have both automatic ejectors and interchangeable chokes.  (They are identical for game purposes.)  The Field Grade Hunter has a solid sighting rib between the barrels, with a bead front sight at the tip of the rib.  The stock is of walnut, with a thick rubber recoil pad on the butt.

Twilight 2000 Notes: This weapon, introduced in 1997, is quite rare.

Charles Daly Model 105/106

Notes: These over-and-under shotguns are in fact built by a Turkish company (I have not yet been able to find out which Turkish company), but they are sold exclusively for and by Charles Daly.  The Models 105 and 106 are meant to be more affordable than the typical Charles Daly shotgun (real life prices are on the low end for over-and-under shotguns of their workmanship, which is still exceptional).

Both the Model 105 and 106 feature engraved side panels with various levels of engraving, as well as an engraved fore-end in front of the trigger guard.  They are known for ease of care and cleaning, as well as disassembly.  They are equipped with double triggers on the Model 105; the front trigger fires the lower barrel and the rear trigger fires the upper barrel. On the Model 106, there is a single trigger, with a barrel selector on the tang.  External metalwork is largely blued (except the engraved portions), but the trigger and in some cases, the trigger guard itself, is gold-plated.  The blueing is particularly impressive, being highly resistant to wear and tear.  The wood of the stock and fore-end is only of medium quality, though it is of Turkish walnut, and the finish is both beautifully impressive and weatherproofed.  The stock has a pistol grip wrist with a rounded end, and the pistol grip wrist and fore-end are impeccably checkered in a fine pattern.  The pistol grip wrist is quite deep, allowing for a raised “fiddleback” cheekpiece.  Both are equipped with a thick rubber recoil pad; this may be one of the Model 105 and 106’s few problems, since the pad sold with the shotguns has generated a lot of complaints for being too thin and too uncomfortable to really absorb felt recoil properly.  Atop the upper barrel is a sighting rib which is ventilated except at the very end; there it becomes solid, with a gold bead sight on it near the muzzle.  The shotguns include variable choke tubes of Full, Modified Cylinder, and Improved Cylinder, included in the cost of the shotguns (both in real life and in the game cost).  .410 gauge models, however, are not equipped with variable choke tubes, nor are they designed for them.

The Model 105 is chambered only for 12 gauge shells, and may be had with a 26 or 28-inch barrel. On the tank, one will find what looks like a dial embedded in the tang; this is in fact a rotary switch that is used to safe the shotgun as well as unlocking it to allow it to be broken open. Versions with 26-inch barrels have a “natural” choke of Improved Cylinder for the top barrel and Modified Cylinder for the bottom barrel; versions with a 28-inch barrel use a Modified Cylindrical choke for the top barrel and Full choke for the bottom barrel.

The Model 106 can be had in chamberings ranging from 12 gauge to .410 gauge, and use 26 inch barrel for all gauges except the 12 and 20 gauge models, which can also be had with a 28-inch barrel.  The Model 106 is essentially a lighter version of the Model 105, but the side-plate engraving is much more elaborate than on the Model 105, including hunting scenes and gold inlay.  Instead of the rotary switch of the Model 105, the Model 106 uses a tang-mounted lever-type switch; this both acts as a safety and to switch which barrel is to be fired.  Most Model 106’s use “natural” chokes of Modified Cylinder for both barrels, though the .410 Gauge version has an upper barrel with a Modified Cylindrical choke and a lower barrel with Full choke.

Twilight 2000 Notes: The Model 105 and 106 are not available in the Twilight 2000 timeline.

Charles Daly Superior Grade Hunter Over-And-Under

Notes: This shotgun, introduced in 1997, is basically a deluxe version of the Field Grade Hunter over-and-under shotgun.  Like the side-by-side Superior Grade Hunter, this shotgun’s breech block is made from chrome-molybdenum steel, plated with a silver-gray coating that is intricately-engraved with either floral motifs or a hunting scene.  The stock is of European walnut and has a pistol grip wrist.  The weapon has a single selective trigger and automatic ejectors, The 12 gauge and 20 gauge versions have interchangeable MC-5 chokes for the barrels (a set of five different chokes), while the 28 gauge and .410 gauge have fixed chokes of either Improved Cylinder, Full, or Modified patterns.  On top of the barrel is a ventilated sighting rib.

A special version of this shotgun is the Superior Sport; this version has ported barrels to reduce recoil.  It has automatic ejectors and a set of MC-5 interchangeable chokes.  Another special version is the Superior Trap; this version is heavier than the others, comes in one barrel length (30 inches), a wide barrel rib with a fluorescent glass bead front sight, and a brass center bead rear sight.  (The Superior Sport also has this rib.)  The barrel is compensated and the butt has a thick recoil pad.

Twilight 2000 Notes: These are very rare shotguns.

FIE SSS

Notes: This gun, though sold exclusively through the US company FIE, is built in Brazil.  The SSS (Single-Shot Special) comes in three gauges, and is a very lightweight and compact weapon with an 18.5-inch barrel and a shortened stock, making the entire weapon a mere 28 inches long.  The SSS was formerly known as the SOB (an acronym for a Portuguese name), but since “SOB” has a negative connotation in the US, the designation was changed.  The SSS is primarily designed to be fired braced from the hip under the arm; it has no sort of recoil pad or buffer, and recoil of 12 gauge ammunition when fired from the shoulder can be painful when fired from the shoulder due to the light weight.  The break-open action is easy to use and includes several safeties – one prevents the hammer from being cocked if the action is not fully closed, one prevents the action from being open or closed if the hammer is back, and of course there is the release/lock for the action.

The FIE/Hamilton & Hunter Single Barrel is a full-stocked, long-barrel version of the FIE SSS.  This gun also has an automatic ejector for spent shells.  The barrel of the FIE/Hamilton & Hunter Single-Barrel is 24 inches long.
