Winchester
M-43
Notes: This is a
“junior rifle,” a rifle meant for beginners and children as a first rifle.
It has a surprising amount of features for a junior rifle, such as a
24-inch barrel, vernier rear sight, sling swivels, and a well-shaped bolt
handle, as well as a generous selection of chamberings.

M-52
Notes: This
rifle began as a heavy target rifle designed for competition in the National
Rifle Matches, which were popular after World War 1.
The original (M-52A) was a very large, heavy rifle, with a 28-inch barrel
and curved box magazines. Later,
the magazine design was simplified, the cocking piece was lightened, and the
barrel shortened to 24 inches; this produced the M-52B.
The top of the rifle had an iron sight, and was also drilled to accept a
telescopic sight mount. Variants of
note include the M-52 Heavy Barrel Target Rifle, with a heavy 24-inch barrel and
a special match-style stock, as well as provision for target optical sights and
counterweights. The M-52B Bull Gun
had an extra-heavy barrel. The
M-52C Heavy Barrel was as the M-52 Heavy Barrel Target Rifle, but had a heavy
28-inch barrel; the M-52C Bull Barrel had an extra-heavy barrel.

Winchester M-54
Notes: This
rifle was designed specifically to provide a weapon to fire Thomas Johnson’s
then-new (1925) .270 Winchester round.
The M-54 was based on the Springfield M-1903, but has a smoother bolt
stroke and bolt action. The stocks
were plain straight walnut, and the receiver was grooved for a telescopic sight.
Variants of note include the M-54 Carbine, with a 20-inch barrel; and the
M-54 Sniper’s Rifle, with a 26-inch extra-heavy barrel.

M-56
Notes: This
rifle, when introduced to the market in 1926, was supposed to provide a bridge
of sorts between the simple Models 1902 and 1904 and the fancy Model 52.
Unfortunately, most customers went for one of the others and bypassed the
M-56; in addition, the price of the M-56 was too high at that time to attract
many buyers. As a result, the M-56
was taken off the market in 1929. A
variant is the M-57 “Accuracy Rifle;” this is basically a heavy-barreled M-56
with bases for a telescopic sight on the receiver.
Though it was considered to be too light to be a serious target rifle, it
was much more successful than the M-56, and was built until 1936 (though the .22
Short version was dropped in 1929).

Winchester
M-69
Notes:
Winchester had a long history with its single-shot rimfire designs, but found
that as time went on, these single-shot designs could not compete in a
marketplace that was moving to magazine-fed rimfire rifles of various types.
Winchester therefore took an existing single-shot design, the Model 59,
and made it into a box magazine-fed rifle.
The stock was also improved, with a pistol-grip stock with a tapered
fore-end. The result was a great
success.
Variants
included the M-72, using a tubular magazine, and the M-75, a target rifle that
was actually used to train basic trainees during World War 2 in Basic Rifle
Marksmanship in addition to being sold as a civilian rifle.
The M-75 had a 28-inch barrel and was drilled and tapped for a scope.
