Charles Daly Field Grade .22 Bolt-Action

Notes: These rifles are actually built in the Philippines by Armscor, and were formerly called the Super Classic M-1400SC and M-12Y.  The Field Grade is a short rifle with metalwork made primarily from chrome-molybdenum steel.  The receiver top has a dovetail rail for telescopic sights, and has backup iron sights including a folding adjustable rear leaf sight.  The stock is of hardwood.  The Field Grade Stainless is similar, but has metalwork of stainless steel and synthetic furniture with a pistol grip wrist.

The Field Grade Youth is designed for children and beginners.  There are two versions: the Youth Single Shot has no magazine and is manually loaded between each shot, and the Youth Repeater is magazine-fed and has a longer barrel.

Twilight 2000 Notes: As these weapons were not sold under the Charles Daly name until 1998, they will still be known by their Armscor designations and are more properly Filipino weapons in the Twilight 2000 world.

Charles Daly .22 Superior Grade/Empire Grade

Notes: The Superior Grade .22 bolt-action rifle is available not only in rimfire calibers, but in the centerfire chambering of .22 Hornet.  The Superior Grade rifle has a blued barrel and receiver of chrome-molybdenum steel and a hardwood stock with a pistol grip wrist.  The Empire Grade is virtually identical, but the grade of wood in the stock is much better and the rear sight is an adjustable leaf sight.  It is not given a separate entry in the table below.

There are also semiautomatic versions of the above rifles; they are virtually identical, except for the semiautomatic actions.

Twilight 2000 Notes: As this rifle was not sold under Charles Daly name until 1998 (it was sold under the Armscor of Philippines name before that), this rifle is not available as such in the Twilight 2000 world.  It is, however, available under the Armscor name (and called the M-1400S in .22 Long Rifle, M-1500S in .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire, and M-1800S in .22 Hornet).

Charles Daly Field Grade Mauser

Notes: This is actually a Yugoslavian import sold only in the US by the Charles Daly Company.  It is a modernized Mauser sporting rifle, and is designed to be accurate enough for experienced shooters, while being relatively newbie-proof.  The entire action is built to operate smoothly while minimizing misfeeds.  The stocks are synthetic, while the metallic parts are normally blued (but can also be had in stainless steel), except where chroming is normally indicated.  The trigger is adjustable.

Charles Daly Superior II

Notes: Similar to the Superior Grade and Empire Grade above, the Superior II is built by Zastava in Serbia, but distributed exclusively by Charles Daly.  It incorporates many of the features of the Field Grade Mauser (see US Sporting Rifles A-D) and other Charles Daly centerfire rifles, and features the same quality construction of those rifles, though the stocks are of oil-finished walnut instead of being synthetic. The stocks are checkered on the fore-end and on the pistol grip wrist.  Metalwork is blued except for the chromed bolt and barrel liner.  The .22 Long Rifle version has iron sights but is not drilled and tapped for a scope mount; the other two do not have iron sights, but are drilled and tapped for a scope mount. All three use 22-inch barrels, but are not interchangeable as far as ammunition is concerned, despite their similarity.  They are very inexpensive rifles in real world terms, actually close to or less then the Twilight 2000 prices listed below.

Twilight 2000 Notes: These rifles are not available in the Twilight 2000 timeline.

Charles Daly Superior Grade Mauser

Notes: Basically a “higher-class” version of the Field Grade Mauser, the Superior Grade Mauser features polished blue metalwork, a hand-fitted gold-plated trigger, a hand-checkered European walnut stock which is highly-polished, a Monte Carlo comb and cheekpiece, a fore-end and pistol grip wrist cap of ebony and with white spacers, a recoil pad, and sling swivels. They are drilled and tapped for a scope mount, but have no iron sights.  The Superior Grade Mauser comes in three versions: the standard Superior Grade Mauser, in calibers ranging from .22-250 to .300 Winchester Magnum, and with a 22-inch barrel for most calibers and a 24-inch barrel for the magnum calibers; the Superior Grade Mauser LH, a left-handed model available only in .30-06 (and is otherwise identical to the standard Superior Grade Mauser for game purposes); and the Superior Grade Safari Mauser, which comes in calibers of .375 or .458 and has a 26-inch barrel and crossbolts for extra strength.

Charles Daly Superior Grade Mini-Mauser

Notes: As the name suggests, this is a version of the Superior Grade designed for firing smaller-caliber cartridges.  The features and construction are basically the same as the standard Superior Grade rifle above, except for the caliber, and the barrel length, which is only 20 inches, and that the Superior Grade Mini-Mauser Hornet has a removable box magazine.  The Mini-Mauser is also available in left-handed version, but only in 5.56mm NATO caliber.

Clifton Arms Scout Rifle

Notes: This is a general-purpose bolt-action rifle, designed to carry around and be used against varmints, predators, or whatever else needs to be shot at short notice.  The Clifton Scout is based on the Ruger 77 Mark II action.  It is a bit larger and heavier than what is normally considered a scout rifle, but is otherwise designed for that sort of purpose.  The rifle is drilled and tapped for a scope mount and has backup iron sights (a folding, adjustable bridge-type ghost ring rear sight and a dovetailed square, Sourdough-type post front sight).  The iron sights are large to enable quick target acquisition (and scout rifles are not meant for long-range shooting under most circumstances).  The stock is synthetic; an unusual feature of this stock is that the bottom has a trap for five rounds of ammunition for the weapon.  The fore-end also has retractable bipod legs.  The barrel is heavy and is made from blackened stainless steel.

Colt Coltsman Sporting Rifle (Mauser-Pattern)

Notes: Designed by Colt, these were built by Jefferson Manufacturing and Kodiak Manufacturing between 1957 and 1961.  The used a plain stock, and only about 5000 were built.  The standard rifle had a 22-inch barrel, but the Deluxe version had a 24-inch barrel.  There is also a Custom version with a Monte Carlo stock and cheekpiece (identical to the standard rifle for game purposes).

Cooper Model 21 Series

Notes: Cooper Arms originally developed an improved bolt system for use on other rifles in 1991; however, it was marketing its own rifles.  One of the first of these was the Model 21, beginning with the Varmint Extreme (also known as the Classic).  As the name suggests, the Varmint Extreme fires small-caliber cartridges with shorter cases.  The bolt is of unusual construction, with the locking lugs in the middle of the bolt’s body instead of at the front as is the case with most rifles.  This works quite well with rounds of low to moderate chamber pressures, allowing faster locking and unlocking.  The Varmint Extreme’s barrel is a heavy 23.75-inch stainless steel floating barrel with a target crown.  The stock is of walnut, with a conventional profile and a half-length fore-end.  All of the Model 21 Series are drilled and tapped for a scope mount, with the exception of the TRP-1.

Similar variants of the Model 21 include the Custom Classic, which is the same as the Varmint Extreme with the exception of a Monte Carlo stock and a high comb and cheekpiece.  The Model 21 Bench Rest is also largely the same, but is equipped with a highly-adjustable Jewell trigger unit and a widened, flat-bottomed fore-end.  These two rifles are identical to the Varmint Extreme for game purposes.

More divergent variants include the Model 36 BR-50, designed for benchrest shooting; it has no magazine, and uses synthetic MacMillan stock (usually black).  The barrel is 22 inches long, and is match-quality, heavy, and floating.  The Model 38 Centerfire Sporter was offered only in two proprietary chamberings, and uses a 23.75-inch Shilen barrel which is floating, heavy, and has a target crown.  The stock is of Claro walnut with a checkered pistol grip wrist and fore-end, and is of the Monte Carlo-type.  The butt has a Pachmayr recoil pad.  The trigger is adjustable.  The Model 38 Centerfire Sporter was produced only until 1994, but it was perhaps the first Cooper-built rifle offered, beginning production in 1991.

The Model 36 Classic Sporter is similar to the standard Varmint Extreme, but fires .22 Long Rifle cartridges, uses a 22.75-inch barrel, and a box magazine.  The Model 36 Custom Classic Sporter is a deluxe Model 36 with a Monte Carlo-style comb and cheekpiece made from select-grade walnut.  The Model 36 Featherweight is also identical except for its synthetic stock, which reduces its weight.  The Model 36 Montana Trailblazer is again the same as the Model 36 Classic Sporter, except for the lightweight tapering barrel and lighter wood stock, making it even lighter than the Featherweight. The Model 40 Centerfire Classic Sporter is basically a centerfire version of the Model 36, with a 23-inch barrel.  Its deluxe counterpart is the Model 40 Centerfire Custom Classic Sporter.

The TRP-1 is a very specialized version of the Model 21; it was designed for ISU Classic competitions.  Firing .22 Long Rifle, this version has no magazine and uses a 22-inch extra-heavy Shilen barrel.  The stock is competition-style, with an adjustable cheekpiece, adjustable buttplate, and fittings for competition optical sights.

In 1996, Cooper Arms introduced what was essentially a medium-action version of the Model 21, called the Model 22 series.  The base Model 22 is the Pro-Varmint Extreme; it is essentially the same as the Model 21 Varmint Extreme, except that the camber and receiver are designed to withstand higher pressures and the bolt lugs are moved to the front of the bolt in the conventional pattern.  The barrel is also 26 inches long.  Variants include the Model 22 Bench Rest, the Model 22 equivalent of the Model 21 Bench Rest, and the Model 22 Black Jack, with a black McMillan synthetic stock and blackened metalwork.

Twilight 2000 Notes: All of these rifles are extremely rare in the Twilight 2000 timeline.

Cooper 57M

Notes: This is a deluxe rimfire rifle designed for adults rather than beginning shooters or children.  In real life, it is fairly expensive due to the quality.  The stock is made from hand-rubbed oil-finished Claro walnut, beautifully finished.  The 24-inch heavy barrel is of stainless steel; it is tapered, lapped, and target-crowned, as well as free-floating.  The wood is of fine-quality and has a butt with a non-slip rubber plate (it is not a pad). There are no iron sights, but the Cooper 57 is drilled and tapped for a telescopic sight mount.  The handguard is ventilated.  Optionally, the Model 57M can have very fine or extra-fine quality wood and engraving on the receiver. The Jackson Hunter variant has a synthetic Monte Carlo-type stock; other variants include the LVT (Light Target/Varmint), the Western Classic, the Classic Model (shown below, though most of the rest are identical in game terms), and the benchrest single-shot model with a 24” extra-heavy barrel, the TRP-3.

Twilight 2000 Notes: This rifle does not exist.

Dakota 76

Notes: A hunting rifle with accuracy more akin to a sniper rifle, the Dakota 76 was designed in the mid 1980s and, though made in limited numbers, has become a classic among American hunting rifles.  It is based on the pre-1964 Ruger M-70 Mauser-type action with a number of improvements which increase the accuracy and hardiness of the rifle.  There are three versions of the Dakota 76, but all three have controlled round feeding and positive extraction, with a special extractor to ensure that this happens.  The rifles have a three position safety which allows the bolt to be operated and a round chambered without the possibility of firing the weapon.  The Dakota 76 is normally tailored to the individual customer; the weapons described below are “stock” versions.

The Dakota 76 Classic has a stock of Grade XX fancy walnut, hand-polished and oil-finished, with checkering in the appropriate places on the pistol-grip-wrist stock.  The butt has a 1-inch thick rubber recoil pad.  The standard barrel is 23 inches.  The Classic has sling swivels, and the front one may also be used as an attachment point for a bipod.  It is equipped with protected adjustable iron sights, both of the normal variety and with a stalking sight further along on the barrel, and is also drilled and tapped for a scope.  The sights have inlays to allow them to be used at night.

The Dakota 76 Safari is designed for heavier and longer rounds.  It is otherwise very similar to the Classic, but the barrel is heavier, the rear iron sight is omitted, it comes in both right and left-hand versions, and has a removable box magazine.  It is in many ways the flagship rifle of the Dakota 76 line.

The Dakota 76 African can fire most standard, long, magnum, and Rigby length cartridges, and uses a 24-inch barrel.  It is otherwise similar to the Safari.
