Alpha Arms Model 1
Notes: This
rifle was made by a Texas company in small numbers.
The rifles were basically specifically built for the customer, and could
be made in virtually any caliber imaginable, and with any barrel length from
20-24 inches. They could be in left
or right-hand versions. The actions
are made from Teflon-coated stainless steel.
The Model 1 versions presented below are in the most common barrel-length
(20 inches) and in the most common calibers.
The Model 1
Alaskan fires medium and large-caliber rounds.
It has a stainless steel 24-inch barrel, a Nitex coating to the action
instead of Teflon, and largely laminated-wood stocks (though some
synthetic-stocked versions were built to customer request).

American Hunting Rifles Safari 550 Series
Notes: American
Hunting Rifles Inc. was founded in 1998 by a Montana gunsmith named Ed Plummer.
At the time, AHR was primarily engaged in the chambering of a series of
powerful wildcat long-action cartridges based on commonly-available brass
(primarily that of the .30-06 Springfield and .416 Rigby) designed by Ken
Howell. AHR also had the services
of other notable gunsmiths and wildcatters, and began to develop even more
powerful proprietary cartridges – all of them huge.
In addition, AHR began to modify the Czech CZ-550 rifle for use with
these new rounds, instead of former offerings based on the Winchester Model 70.
Some of those rounds are indeed monsters.
Most of the
largest of these rounds are chambered in the Safari 550 DGR (Dangerous Game
Rifles). Based upon the CZ-550
American Safari Magnum, AHR also adds dovetailed scope mounts, an improved
controlled-feed claw-type extractor, a match-grade chrome-moly steel barrel
(floated with glass bedding), and a stock of AA Fancy English Walnut.
Tolerances are tightened, including a realigning of the barrel and
receiver. The trigger mechanism is
single stage, but adjustable. The
bolt handle is straightened and moved forward slightly.
The iron sights consist of fixed peep sight at the rear of the receiver,
a folding leaf-type sight in the “scout” position, and a hooded bead sight with
a fiberoptic inlay at the front (except when chambered for .585 AHR or .600
Overkill, which use a ramp front sight with a fiberoptic inlay).
Metal surfaces are matte blued.
The stock has a 1-inch Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad on the butt, and
the pistol grip wrist and fore-end have 22 lpi checkering.
Several options are available, including alternate iron sights, alternate
scope mounts, upgraded wood for the stock, upgraded checkering, alternate
finishes, a detachable box magazine instead of an internal magazine, alternate
barrel lengths (the standard is 25 inches, which is what I have used in the
charts below), and a special muzzle brake called an “X-Brake.”
The Safari 550
PGR (Plains Game Rifle, also known as the American Plains Game Rifle or the
African Plains Game Rifle) is a smaller brother to the DGR.
It is for the most part identical to the DGR (especially in the
mechanism, enhancements, and options), but is a smaller, lighter package, using
a 23.625-inch barrel as standard.
The mix of chamberings is also different, being more limited and for the most
part smaller than that of the DGR.
Twilight 2000
Notes: These rifles do not exist in the Twilight 2000 timeline.

APA Tactical Competition
Notes: The APA
(American Precision Arms) Tactical Competition is designed to be useful in
hunting, long-range competition shooting, and tactical sniping applications;
competition, however, is the core of its design. Based on a variant of the
Remington 700 action called the Badger Action, the Tactical Competition starts
with an improved trigger and magazine group called the RTG (Refined Trigger
Guard). The Guard starts with a lightweight 7075 aluminum trigger guard which
incorporates a integrated magazine catch which does not protrude from the
trigger guard, and is essentially part of the trigger guard.
This links to the box magazine.
The trigger itself is a hand-tuned Jewell trigger (in fact, the entire
rifle is hand-tuned). The 26-inch barrel is a heavy contour Broughton #6 barrel,
tipped with a proprietary APA “Little Bastard” muzzle brake.
The rifle has a McMillan A-5 synthetic stock with a deep pistol grip
wrist, texturing of the pistol grip wrist and fore-end for a better grip, an
adjustable cheekpiece, and spacers to adjust length of pull.
The standard scope sold with the Tactical Competition is a Nightforce
5.5-22x50mm scope, and is included in the cost below.
The top of the receiver has a MIL-STD-1913 rail.
The magazines used are identical to those of the British AW rifle.
A variant of the
Tactical Competition, the Do-It-All Rifle, uses an APA Genesis action along with
a heavy-gauge match rifle 22 inches in length, without a muzzle brake. The
extractor is based on the M-16 extractor.
The stock is a simpler synthetic McMillan HTG stock.
The underside is studded for a bipod, though none in included with the
rifle. The stock has a thick recoil
pad. The entire rifle, metalwork,
and magazines are coated in KG Gun-Kote Sage Green with a camouflage pattern.
Atop the receiver is a MIL-STD-1913 rail.

A-Square Hamilcar
Notes: The
Hamilcar may be regarded as a lighter version of the Hannibal; it is lighter,
but the chamberings still include stout cartridges like the .300 Weatherby
Magnum. Most of the special
A-Square construction of the Hannibal, in fact, is duplicated on the Hamilcar,
but in a lighter weight. The weapon
is equipped with mounting blocks and rings for telescopic sights, though
A-Square will substitute other types of mounting equipment upon request, and any
of their mounting methods include A-Square’s Quick Disconnect Unit which allows
the optics to be quickly removed and replaced without losing the sight’s zero.
Despite the relatively low weight, the Hamilcar does not use any sort of
light alloys, composites, or plastics in its construction, except for the firing
pin, which is a titanium alloy for strength; in addition, all metal parts are
Teflon-coated. Like the Hannibal,
the Hamilcar generally uses a 26-inch match-quality LW-50 stainless steel barrel
(and this is what was used for the charts below); however, there really isn’t
any “standard” barrel length, as A-Square will make the barrel length (almost
the entire rest of the rifle) to order.
Twilight 2000
Notes: The Hamilcar does not exist in the Twilight 2000 timeline.

A-Square Hannibal
Though
originally built only from 1983-91, this rifle was made in literally over a
score of different calibers, some of which are pretty exotic.
(Production picked up again in the late 1990s.)
The Hannibal is built on a modified Enfield M-1917 action; most have
hand-oil-finished walnut stocks, but some were built with synthetic stocks.
The tolerances are very tight and the parts fit together so well that
only a bare minimum of lubrication is required.
They have recoil dampening bolts in the stock, as well as a ventilated
recoil pad on the butt. The barrel
is a match-quality LW-50 stainless steel barrel; though A-Square will build the
Hannibal to customer order with any barrel length requested, 26 inches is the
most common barrel length. The
barrels are floated using a steel-reinforced epoxy bedding material.
The action uses controlled feeding with a non-rotating claw-type
extractor, and the entire action is machined from D-2 tool steel.
The stocks are made using a special ergonomic pattern (after
consultations with a weapons system engineer, an orthopedist, an internist, and
an anthropologist!). The trigger
unit, action, and magazine’s floorplate are bedded into the stock using the same
material as the barrel bedding. The
bolt handle is extended and curved to ensure that it clears the scope while
allowing the bolt to be opened or closed with just the thumb of the firing hand.
All metalwork is Teflon-coated for environmental resistance and operation
with very little lubricant. The
scope bases and rings are mounted with heavier screws than most rifles, and
A-Square will also substitute other mounting devices as desired.
Typical A-Square rear scope bases are longer than usual to for a better
fit to an individual shooter and also allow the use of long scopes.
The mounts also incorporate A-Square’s Quick Disconnect Unit, which
allows optics to be repeatedly removed and/or swapped without losing the
shooter’s zero. The Hannibal is
also fitted with backup iron sights.
It should be
noted that the following chamberings are not listed on A-Square’s web site as
currently available: .270 Winchester, 7mm STW, 7mm Remington Magnum, .30-06
Springfield, .300 Winchester Magnum, .300 H&H Magnum, .300 Weatherby Magnum,
.308 Norma Magnum. However, it is
well-known that A-Square will customize a Hannibal (or any of its rifles) to
almost any chambering desired.
