CZ 3

Notes: This new sporting rifle is actually made by CZ’s US branch, CZ-USA.  Though it is primarily meant for the North American, and particularly the US consumer, it is exported elsewhere.  It is quite similar to the Winchester Model 70 – it will even accept Model 70 scope mounts in addition to CZ’s standard scope mounts.  It is styled with Americans in mind, instead of the normal “European look” of CZ sporting rifles.  The metal parts are finished in matte stainless steel, and the stocks are of high-quality walnut.  The action tends to be a bit rough, but this can be easily fixed (Very Easy: Gunsmith or Easy: Small Arms (Rifle)).  As set by the factory, the trigger pull is a bit heavy, but the trigger is adjustable.

Twilight/Merc 2000 Notes: This weapon does not exist.

CZ 365

Notes: Originally known as the ZKW-465, this rifle fires small-caliber rifle rounds.  It is basically a miniature Mauser, and is an enlarged ZKM 451 with the safety catch moved to the right side of the receiver behind the bolt handle.  The trigger guard was enlarged and the magazine was slanted to accommodate necked rounds.  Though 40,000 were built, CZ 365’s chambered for anything other than .22 Hornet are extremely rare.

CZ 452

Notes: This is a Czech-made rimfire rifle that is a modernized version of the old ZKM 452 rifle.  It is a basic sort of bolt-action rifle, with a lacquered wood half-stock, hogs-back comb, and sling swivels.  The CZ 452-2E can accept a sound suppressor.  Several variants exist other than the standard CZ 452-2E, including the Lux, a deluxe version with a polished walnut stock and polished blued metalwork (identical for game purposes); the Style, with a synthetic stock that has a roughened texture; the Special, with a polished beechwood stock and checkering in the right places (again, identical to the standard version for game purposes); the Junior, with a shortened butt and barrel; and the CZ 453 Standard, with a rocking L-type sight, grooves for a scope mount, and a simplified trigger mechanism; the CZ 453 Lux, similar in concept to the 452-2E Lux (and identical to the CZ 453 for game purposes); and the CZ 513 Farmer, a shorter-barreled version of the CZ 453.  An unusual modification of the CZ 452 is the Ultra Lux, which takes a Lux and puts a 28.6-inch barrel on it, along with a fully-adjustable tangent rear sight, and changes the wood type to high-grade beech to bring down the weight somewhat. The lower weight allows the Ultra Lux with the CMP Rimfire Sporter class of competition. The CZ 452 American is a rifle that was, as the name suggests, designed with the US (and North American) export market in mind; it is not available until 2004.  It has no iron sights, being designed for use with a telescopic sight.  The CZ 452 Training Rifle is designed, not for military trainees, but for youngsters learning how to shoot.  The stock is beech, but with a dark finish and in the same shape as the Lux and Ultra Lux.  The fore-end has a Schnabel tip, and the rifle has a 24.8-inch barrel. The Scout is designed to be a teenager’s first “real” rifle, and is made from lighter woods, a shorter LOP, and a shorter 16.2-inch barrel. Though the Scout is delivered from CZ with a single-shot adapter, it can take 5 and 10-roiund magazines with a minimum of user modification.

Twilight 2000 Notes: The CZ 452 American, of course, does not exist.

CZ 455

Notes: This is a rimfire bolt-action rifle, designed for accuracy, but primarily meant for varmint hunting, pest control, practice and target shooting, and as a rifle to introduce beginners to firearms.  The company website says that eventually, the Model 452 and 513 series will be folded into the Model 455 line. The base member of the CZ 455 line is the Model 455 Lux, a rifle with scout-type sights and drilled and tapped for most scope mounts.  Like all members of the Model 455 line, that barrel may be changed in order to change caliber, and on the Lux, the stock is also interchangeable with a variety of stocks sold by CZ.  The standard Lux stock is designed specifically for use with iron sights, and is made of walnut.  The Lux features tighter tolerances, a hammer-forged barrel, and is made on up-to-date manufacturing equipment.  The barrel is 20.6 inches long, heavy profile, and match-quality. The Lux has adjustable sights and a trigger adjustable for pull weight.

The CZ 455 American has features designed to appeal to an American and North American market, such as the style of stock and the synthetic construction of the stock, a stainless steel barrel and action, and drilling and tapping for a scope mount, with no iron sights. It has the same adjustable trigger used on the CZ 452, with pull weight ranging from 2.5-3.5 pounds, very light for such a rifle.. The barrel is as the Lux above (except for being stainless steel), but is slightly shorter at 20.5 inches. The Tacticool is sort of a “tactical” version of the Model 455; it is in fact not very different than the American. The stock shape, especially in the deep pocket pistol grip-wrist, is one of the few differences, as are the three attachment points for a sling (the American has only two).  The stock of the Tacticool has a space in the lower stock to hold a spare magazine.  In addition to the CZ 455 American, there is a CZ 455 American Combo, which is a switch barrel version allowing the CZ 455 American Combo to fire .22 Long Rifle and .17 HMR with simply the change of the barrel.

The CZ 455FS is similar to the Model 455 Lux, but uses a full-length Mannlicher-style stock, extending to the muzzle.  At the muzzle endcap is a tip of polished ebony.  Sights are similar to the Lux, being in the scout position, as well as having drilling and tapping for most scope mounts.  The interchangeable barrel system allows the CZ 455FS to fire any of its chamberings with only a barrel change; in addition, the action, barrel, and trigger pack can be placed in any other Model 455 stock.  Barrel length is 20.5 inches, and is similar to a Lux’s barrel in construction.

The CZ 455 Varmint is, of course, designed for varmint, and as many such rifles, features a bull barrel instead of a heavyweight barrel.  Barrel quality is otherwise like the Lux above.  This barrel can be swapped out for other caliber Varmint-weight barrels if desired. The barrel is 20.5 inches long, and the stock is similar to the CZ 455FS.  The trigger is adjustable for pull weight.  The Varmint SST is the same except for the trigger pack, which is fully adjustable – for pull weight, pull length, and letoff length.  Neither rifle has iron sights – they are drilled or tapped for any sight mount, but do not otherwise come with sights. The Varmint Evolution is designed for target shooting, even in environments like cross-country shooting or Olympic shooting. It is also quite useful in regular varmint shooting, and is essentially a Varmint given accurizing and a fancy blue-gray stock, calls a Boyds stock.  The stock is specially designed, with a swelled cheekpiece, a skeletonized stock, and a forend with just enough weight to balance the weapon and act as a palm swell.  The 20.5-inch barrel is of bull profile and otherwise contracted in the same manner as other Model 455s, and also has a target crown.  No iron sights are supplied, but it is drilled and for most scope mounts.

It should be noted that any of the Varmint and American series can swap barrels, stocks, and actions as desired.

Though a member of the Model 455 family by virtue of its action, the Varmint Precision Trainer is designed to duplicate as much as possible the feel of a military rifle, making ideal for military marksmanship training.  At the same time, the Varmint Precision Hunter is made to appeal to target shooters and hunters.  The first thing noticeable is the Coyote Tan Manners Composite stock which allows for a rock-hard bed for the action while making it possible to mount a free-floating barrel.  The stock is made of MCS-T4, a blend of carbon fiber and fiberglass in multiple alternating layers. The stock has a deep-pocket pistol-grip-wrist.  If desired, CZ will embed the stock interior with extra, carefully-placed weights to user’s specifications, or leaves spaces in the stock, again to make it weight and balance as desired. The barrel is 20.5 inches, of heavy profile, and free floating.  The weight below is sort of a middle-weight.

CZ 513 Basic

Notes: This new Czech small-caliber rifle is designed for the first time shooter and for practice shooting.  It is a simplified version of the CZ 452, and has a plain beechwood stock, non-adjustable iron sights with no drilling and tapping for a scope, and a non-adjustable trigger.  It is a compact and easy-to-use weapon.

The earlier CZ 513 Farmer has a larger magazine, an adjustable rear sight, and a slightly longer barrel.

Twilight 2000 Notes: This weapon exists only in Eastern Europe.

CZ 527

Notes: This is a Czech hunting rifle popular in Eastern Europe and some parts of Africa and the Middle East.  As CZ (Ceska Zbrojovka) manufactured a large amount of Mauser rifles for the Nazis after being taken over during World War 2, they have put a lot of that experience into building its line of sporting rifles, including the 527 series.  The 527 is designed for smaller calibers. The Lux version has a longer barrel and is built of stronger, but lighter alloys and superior woods.  The CZ 527 American was, of course, designed for export to the US (and North American) market, and uses an American-style stock, some different calibers, a single set trigger, and rings for American-built scopes; it has no iron sights.  Wood or synthetic stocks are available.  The CZ 527 Carbine is made in both a small-caliber and intermediate-caliber model, and is designed to be a brush gun, with open iron sights and light weight, and a short barrel.  It has a single set trigger.  The CZ 527 Varmint fires, in addition to 5.56mm NATO, the .17 Remington cartridge.  The 5.56mm NATO version has a synthetic stock; the .17 Remington version has a walnut stock.  It has a single set trigger and a much longer barrel than other models.  There are no iron sights, but the Varmint has rings for a scope. .17 Hornet is a new chambering for 2013, made available because of the beginning of factory production of the cartridge and because of the greater power of the .17 Hornet.

A subset of the American, the M-1 American, improves on the aesthetics and ergonomics of the base American.  It features lighter-colored wood, a more ergonomic pistol grip wrist, an improved trigger guard and a smaller, flush-fitting magazine.  It comes in both wood-stocked and synthetic-stocked versions.  The barrel is the same 21.9-inch design. A subset of the Varmint, the Varmint Target, was introduced at the same time; this has an unusually shaped stock with a hooked butt, allowing for more cheek rest space and a deep pistol grip wrist. (The pistol grip wrist is almost vertical.)  The fore-end is narrower than on the Varmint, but has a palm swell; it also has two sling swivels, either of which can be used as bipod attachment points.  The stock is of Kevlar/composites with a recoil pad, while the 24-inch medium-profile barrel is target-crowned.  The Varmint Target, though descended from the Varmint, hardly resembles the Varmint externally, and is meant primarily for competition.

Twilight 2000 Notes: Of course, the CZ 527 American is not available.  The CZ 527 Varmint does not exist either.

Notes: This is basically a CZ 527 chambered for larger calibers.  However, the box magazine is not standard on this weapon, though it is available; instead, most of these weapons are equipped with an internal magazine.  The Sport version was designed for target shooting and comes with an optical scope; the Sniper version coves both with a telescopic scope and a bipod.

CZ 550

Notes: The CZ 550 is a bolt-action hunting rifle produced primarily with the export market in mind.  The stocks are made from walnut, and have a thick recoil pad at the butt.  It has no iron sights, only rings for a telescopic sight.  The controls are handy and easy to manipulate.

In recent years, a few more models have been added.  The CZ 550 American is designed with the North American export market in mind; it uses an American-style stock and fires slightly-different calibers, and has a longer barrel than most CZ 550s.  It has no iron sights, and is equipped with scope rings that will mount most US and Canadian telescopic sights.  The American Kevlar has a Kevlar/composite stock and is chambered only for 6.5mm Swedish, 9.3x62mm Mauser, .30-06, and .270, but is otherwise identical to the American in game terms. The CZ 550 Varmint has a long 25.6-inch barrel and a single set trigger; it comes only in two calibers, and can have a synthetic or wooden stock.  There are no iron sights, but scope rings are provided.  It is meant primarily for North American export.

The CZ 550 American Safari Magnum is a variant of the CZ 550 Magnum firing a different mix of powerful cartridges and using American styling in the stock.  They are equipped with rubber recoil pads, scope rings (with express backup iron sights), and synthetic or wooden stocks (which may be finished with simple lacquer or laminated).  Barrel length of these versions is 24 inches.

The CZ 550 Safari Magnum (also known as the Brno-602) and Medium Magnum are designed for the European market, though they have been exported elsewhere; the Safari Magnum fires a slightly different mix of ammunition than the standard Magnum, but uses the same sort of European stock; the Medium Magnum fires only 7mm Remington Magnum and is a rather light magnum rifle.  The Safari Magnum has scope rings and express iron sights; the Medium Magnum has scope rings and standard Iron sights.

The Ultimate Hunter (also called the CZ 550 UHR, for Ultimate Hunting Rifle) is new for 2006; it features a 23.6-inch heavy free-floating barrel, and extreme attention has been given to the fit and finish of the rifle to make it as accurate and tough as possible.  The Ultimate Hunter comes with a proprietary sight base which can mount most civilian scopes in the world today.  (There are no iron sights.)  Shooting Times magazine says the tolerances are so tight on the Ultimate Hunter as to be nonexistent.  The stock is of checkered American Walnut, with a thick rubber recoil pad on the butt, and finished in natural color and weatherproofed.  The metalwork is satin blued.  A second version, the UHR Kevlar, has a Kevlar/composite stock, but is actually heavier than the wood-stocked version. Currently only one chambering is available; it is not known whether other chamberings are planned, but I’d say it’s a safe bet that there are.

The CZ 550 HET (High Energy Tactical) was designed specifically for the USSOCOM Precision Tactical Rifle program, but is also available for civilian sales. The HET features a heavy, match-quality barrel, 26 or 28 inches long tipped by a muzzle brake.  It’s a heavy rifle; the rifle is available in three calibers, though the version being tested by SOCOM is in .338 Lapua Magnum with a 26-inch barrel.  The HET features most of the features that make the CZ 550 a great rifle, but also has a massive claw-type extractor and an extended bolt knob.  The pocket of the pistol grip wrist is deep, and the bolt is relieved to clear any optics.  The butt has a thick recoil pad, and the stock has a raised cheekpiece. The HET is a sniper rifle, but is included here for completeness.

In November of 2010, CZ-USA (CZ’s offices and plant in the Kansas City) announced a budget version of the CZ 550, the CZ 557 Sporter.  The real-world price of the CZ 557 is much lower than that of a CZ 550 of the same caliber, due to the use of lower-priced hardwood for the stock and a shorter 20.6-inch barrel (the game price is not much different, however).  However, the forged receiver, integral scope mount dovetails, and hammer-forged barrel were retained; in addition, a short extractor and plunger-style ejector are used to increase reliability. The CZ 557 uses a trigger which is user-adjustable for pull weight, pull length, and overtravel, and the safety allows the bolt to be cycled without allowing the weapon to fire.

The CZ 550 Carbon Kevlar is sort of a test of a new lightweight and weatherproof rifle.  The stock is otherwise American pattern, with a 20.6-inch specially-bedded cold hammer forged barrel.  External metalwork is blued; the Kevlar is gray. The Medium is the same rifle, but chambered for 7mm Magnum and has a longer, heavier 23.6-inch barrel; there is also a Medium Kevlar version of the Medium; it is another case where the synthetic stock version is heavier than the wood stock version.

The CZ 557 is basically a short-action, precision-made version of the CZ-550. The CZ 557 is push-fed, and the receiver is precision-machined with a barrel that is specially-bedded to mimic a floating barrel, yet has a bedded barrel’s strength. The barrel is tapered, starting out as a heavy-profile barrel and tapering to a width that is still heavy, but much narrower than the base of the 25.6-inch barrel.  The stock is walnut, and has a deep hand pocket and palm swell and laser-cut stippling on the semi-pistol grip. The comb is raised and the butt has a thick rubber recoil pad. The CZ 557 comes with the buyer’s choice of several scopes.

Twilight 2000 Notes: The “American” variants (including the Ultimate Hunter), the Safari Magnum, the HET, the CZ 557, and the Medium Magnum) do not exist in the Twilight 2000 timeline.

CZ Safari Classics Express Rifles

Notes: The CZ Safari Classics line is actually a product of CZ’s USA subsidiary; the movement for the Safari Classics’ design began in the US, and though they are now sold all over the world, their primary sales are in the US and Canada.  Most likely, without the end of the Cold War, the Safari Classics would simply not exist.

The Safari Classics grew out of the CZ 550 and CZ 550 American Safari Magnum, and further back, the European Mauser-type express and big game hunting rifles.  CZ does have considerable experience with heavy-caliber and high-powered Mauser type rifles, going back to before the Second World War, but they found a ready market for such rifles in post-Cold War America.  (Some American hunters are apt to pick a .458 Lott-firing rifle and use it to hunt North American game, which is overkill, but does sell rifles…)  The Express and Magnum express rifles are essentially “semi-custom” rifles; one picks a basic rifle form, stock, and the desired caliber, and CZ-USA makes their rifle, to their body measurements and almost any “quirk” they may desire.  The trigger pack is also the CZ Single Set-Trigger, which is set at the factory or by a local gunsmith to the shooter’s specifications.  Finish, especially on the stock, is beautiful, with the stocks being made out of a minimum of #1 fancy-grade American Walnut with a recoil pad, with dual recoil crossbolts.  Options include bolt jewelling, a muzzle brake, an ebony fore-end tip, custom glass bedding (including a floating barrel), and sling swivels in up to five places.  (These options will not be covered below.) The barrel is generally 24 inches (again, length can be changed by a customer’s order), cold-hammer forged, high-quality and made with a CZ secret mix of steels, and premium glass bedding. Iron sights are not generally included with the Express Rifle, but the receiver is dovetailed for scope mounting.  The mounts for the scope are included, but rings are extra cost.  Even the mounts that come with the rifle are cold-hammer forged.

The chamberings below are representative rather than comprehensive.  For the right money, CZ will chamber these rifles for just about any round.

The Magnum Express rifle fires heavy magnum rounds, while the Express fires standard-length rounds.  The Magnum Express has a slightly-longer 24.02-inch barrel, negligible for these calculations.  The .500 Jeffery and .505 Gibbs have a mercury recoil buffer in addition to the recoil bolts and recoil pad, further decreasing felt recoil.

Twilight 2000 Notes: These rifles do not exist in the Twilight 2000 timeline.

Model 21H

Notes: This is a modification of the Mauser-pattern sporting rifles that had already been so common in Europe by 1937.  Like most Mauser-pattern sporting rifles, it had a half-stock.  The bolt was shaped to allow for use of a scope, and the safety catch was moved to lock both the firing pin and bolt.  The production of this rifle largely stopped in 1940 after the Nazi invasion of Czechoslovakia, but picked up again in 1946 and continued until 1950.

SC 550 Safari Classic

Notes: This is a big-game, classic-cartridge variant of the CZ 550 Safari Magnum, firing a variety of exotic rounds.  They are generally similar in construction and form to the CZ 550 Safari Magnum, but constructed in a more heavy-duty manner, with heavier and higher-grade steel, stronger stocks, a heavier barrel, and a set trigger.  Metalwork is either polished blue or matte blue.  The stocks are of American walnut (these rifles are actually made by CZ-USA’s operation in Utah), and have a straight-comb stock with a pistol grip wrist which is checkered along with the fore-end.  The butts have thick rubber recoil pads, which unfortunately do not help much due to the powerful ammunition used.  Barrels for the SC 550 are 24 inches.  They are drilled and tapped for a scope mount, and also have iron stalking-type sights.

Twilight 2000 Notes: These rifles are not available in the Twilight 2000 timeline.

ZG 47

Notes: This is a bolt-action sporting rifle produced from 1949-1963.  It is based on a Mauser action, but with a radial safety catch.  The ZG 47 was considered to be the finest of all Czech sporting rifles, but was nevertheless eventually superseded by the ZKK 600 and taken out of production.

ZKK 600

Notes: This is the most successful Eastern European sporting rifle since the end of World War 2, with production in the hundreds of thousands.  It is basically a Mauser rifle made with 1960s technology.  Set triggers could be obtained if the buyer desired, and they were very popular and common.  For a brief time after World War 2, the Czech Army considered a variant of the ZKK 600 for use as a sniper rifle.  Three versions were built: the ZKK 600, ZKK 601, and ZKK 602, all designed for different mixes of cartridges.

ZKM 451

Notes: This is another rifle that was a Koucky design, but produced by Ceska Zbrojovka.  It is a bolt-action rimfire sporting rifle that was introduced in 1946 and was an instant success.  It is a sturdy rifle with classic features, with a simple half-stock and a semi-pistol-grip wrist.  It is grooved for a scope.  The design was refined through the years, producing the ZKM 451-Ex (with a tangent rear sight, identical for game purposes); The ZKM 452, with two barrel lengths; the ZKM 454 Training Rifle, used by the military as a training rifle, and externally similar to the VZ-24; the ZKM 455 and 456, target rifles with optical sights, heavy barrels, and improved triggers; and the ZKM 573, an improved ZKM 451 built until 1973.
